2011 Top Web Hosting Providers

One big issue I had was with accessing the Media Library from the Add/Edit Product page (when you click Upload Image and switch to the Media Library). If there was no one accessing it for a while, it would load the Media Library tab pretty quick, but after the first couple of pages it starts taking 15-30 seconds to load a page, sometimes longer, which was unacceptable. I spent several hours with HostGator trying to determine what was different on their servers, since I have similar setups on other hosts, I assumed it had to be an issue with the host.
I still know there has to be some server environment setting that is causing the issue since another server runs this Media Library with no problems. However, after over two weeks of poor support from HostGator, I finally got an answer, which by itself was still wrong, but gave me a clue to what the trigger could be, and after some digging, I found this code, took it out, and now the Media Library page load much faster.

WPEC runs some additional code when you access this Media Library (compared to the Posts/Pages standard Media Library and the Media->Library page). One thing it does is regenerate the size metadata for each image in case it’s missing, each time you load a Media Library page.

While I understand the need to run this check, maybe it would be better to run this check only once, or move it to a tool with options to check an individual image from the media library or to check all images from the Store settings page.

So for now, I have commented this code out and will take note to test it and remove it again when updating the plugin. I’m sure there are probably other sites with this issue, but I could not find anything about this issue anywhere. Now I have some other questions….

What is different that causes this on HostGator (as a client on our reseller account)? Is there some other problem that is triggering this check to run? Can anyone confirm this issue? What would be the consequences of disabling this code (as I have done)? I’m interested to hear if anyone else has ever seen this or knows anything about this type of issue. Can anyone shed some more light on this issue?

P.S. I have also posted these questions on the GetShopped forums, I will try to keep this post updated with the responses I get there.

I know this seems like a dramatic push from Google to get their already ever expanding “Google +” network off the ground, and it probably is – but this seems like a real “cheap shot” in my opinion. I know twitter and Google might not have come to an agreement, but come on Google executives, it was never about the money before! Don’t you remember? The reason Google has been so successful is due to their unbelievable ability to somehow “read your mind” and give you that “exact page” you were hoping for – right at the top of the search results page, every time! And their ability isn’t something that came with “buying the right connections,” it came with taking in to account factors that most others companies weren’t looking at, and it really kept companies and people from “cheating” the system.  I really hope we don’t see that happen here. I could see spammer’s flocking to “Google +” to try and capitalize on this current “audible” by Google, but I do think this move by them will be short lived, or they’re in real trouble!

What can you do about it?

Get on Google + right away! And Signup for both a business and a personal account – you can do this by simply creating a Google account or by visiting www.google.com/plus), and start building your network, friends… Just basically do EVERYTHING you did on Facebook already – I know you don’t want to hear that, and it’s a lot of work, but there really is no choice unfortunately) The faster you get on Google + and get actively “blogging / talking” away, the faster you will see an impact in your overall daily search results. Also, don’t forget to create the “business page” (that’s why I said both personally and professionally) you’ll want to Create a Google + Business Page and this can be done by simply clicking the link here https://plus.google.com/pages – and once you get to the “Google + Create a Page” you want to create a business/local business page, obviously choose whichever is applicable… One nice thing about this process though is that Google will usually do a search for your business by your phone number and a majority of the time – and especially if you already have a Google Local/Place Page created – then it will find that company data/info and import it for you. (saves you some time, which is nice!)

Speed is VERY fast, they use “cpanel” as opposed to most of the other “inferior” control panels used by other competitors.

2.) HostMonster - Starting @ 5.95/mo - 24% 0ff Coupon Code: TNBHosting – Some of my friends argue that HostMonster should be first, well, in actuality if I didn’t have such a long and “successful” business relationship with HostGator, HostMonster just might have come in at #1. But right now, in 2011, with the Hosting market extremely competitive, I have to give the edge to HostGator. I will say though that going with HostMonster, you really don’t lose much of anything – I mean HostMonster still has cpanel just like HostGator and it comes with all the ameneties you can expect from the other providers. If your debating between HostMonster and a company not on this list – it shouldn’t even be a debate…. Lol.

3.) LiquidWeb - Starting @ 25.95/mo – One of the MOST Reliable servers/hosting providers/networks on the planet. They have 99.99 percent uptime, but better yet, they guarantee it! (If they go down, they credit you like 30:1 towards your money – that’s putting your “money where your mouth is,” literally! lol) The only caveat to LiquidWeb is that you do pay for this “premium” uptime and INCREDIBLE customer service, you pay almost 4 times what you would pay with HostGator, HostMonster, Godaddy, etc… – But if you think you can afford it, and you don’t want to take chances with your websites “connectivity” – then get it!

4.) IXWebHosting – Starting @ 3.95 - 20% off Coupon Code: TNBHosting – I didn’t use to be a big fan of this company, I’ll be extremely honest, but in time they have really started to grow on me. They now offer exceptional customer service, along with great pricing, and great uptime (which is what it’s all about). They come with cpanel and plesk (optional) and they also offer really great “Cloud” services.

5.) GoDaddy – Starting @ 6.99 – Believe it or not, GoDaddy has to – and always will be – last on my list… And it’s not some personal vendetta that I have against them or a bad experience that set me off against Bob Parsons and his firm a few years ago (that’s their CEO) – but It’s really ONE main thing. (well one thing wrapped around 1,000′s of things…) “Anything that seems to work on EVERY OTHER HOST, will almost always NEVER work on GoDaddy” – Now I can’t explain it, I wish I could and I might get a few million from Bob just to fix it but I have to say – he has some REAL issues out in Arizona at GoDaddy’s corporate headquarters. They also don’t offer cpanel in ANY form or fashion… To me that’s unforgivable. They are using “their own” platform as well as Plesk’s latest panel which drives me NUTS. The only good thing about this company, and it really is “the only good thing,” but I’d have to say it’s probably the domain registrations. They are inexpensive, that’s really it, lol. If all you want is a domain name, and you want it cheap, and of course all you want to do is “re-point” it to another host after, then GoDaddy is for you! Note to Bob : The day you fix all these “internal disasters” at your company, is the day I will “re-evaluate” it, you have my word.

Google just announced this past weekend, over the 4th of July of all times too, HA, that they would no longer make the Google Wonder Wheel available to the public! Google did not even indicate one way or another as to their future intentions with the Wonder Wheel. There wasn’t even a “slight hint” to the possibility of a “newer more improved” Wonder Wheel, which was really what I was hoping for in all of this… The only thing Google did however was indicate that they may provide some type of “alternative” keyword searching tool/mechanism or “new type of functionality” all together… You can learn more by clicking here.

I know this strikes a serious blow to many people out there, especially me, who use this tool (almost on a daily basis), to help identify Keywords and Phrases that are most commonly used, and suggested by the most powerful and popular search engine on the planet – Google. And for Google to take away the Wonder Wheel from us short tempered, already on edge “SEO” (Search Engine Optimization) and “SEM” (Search Engine Marketing) maniacs, but here we refer to us as NERDS, but regardless… This has definitely struck a serious blow!!

The only good news I can tell you guys is that you are now aware of the fact that it’s not their, so don’t go crazy when you can’t find it! The bad news…. I think all of us designers and programmers have to scramble and find some type of alternatives… But don’t worry – The Nerd Blurb has found some alternatives that may be right up your ally.

Alternatives:

1.) KwMap.net – Most of you might not know this but there was already an “up and coming” keyword/phrase website that had come out on the scene just two years ago called KwMap.net  – On this site, you can simply type in your search term and be given a “diagram” of the most common “related” phrases/terms as well as a keyword list on the right. (Anything you click on, on either the diagram or the keyword list will all act just like the Wonder Wheel and will replace your current search with your newly “select phrase/keyword.”

2.) Google is now using its “Related Searches” tool a bit more than it was before. Fortunately, this tool is working very similarly to the original Google “Wonder Wheel.” All you have to do is select a keyword phrase then simply goto Search Tools at the bottom left (as usual), and select “Related Searches” in the list. Then at the very top of Google’s search results, it should now have a “Related Searches for xxxxxx” (xxxxxx being your search phrase(s) obviously) – From here you can select any of the “Popular Terms” that Google has come up with and it will work almost exactly like the “Wonder Wheel” (but without the “wheel / spider” effect, ha). Results are VERY CLOSE to what I was getting with the Wonder Wheel…

3.) http://correlate.googlelabs.com/ Many of you may or may not know what this is, but I have been using this for a little while now.. (Keep in mind it is still in its “Beta” stage – so occasionally I do run into bugs…), but go ahead and check it out while if can – It’s a VERY cool tool!  http://correlate.googlelabs.com/

4.) WordTracker from WordTracker.com – This is a FABULOUS tool, but unfortunately, it isn’t free… It costs about 70 dollars a month to have access to the “WordTracker.” But I believe that if you don’t want to use the “Related Search” tool from Google, this is your next BEST alternative.
